DM you're wrong, the general idea of sky is that it is the Earth's Atmosphere. The only reason you don't see it at night is because the light is defracted in the Atmosphere, giving the atmosphere a colour, at night there is not enough light to do this so you see into the "infinite" space that you talk of.

Space becomes the night sky, as the actual atmosphere is invisible due to the lack of light hitting the atmosphere, as well as the improper angle of refraction, meaning that what light is seen, as we see light and its reflections....nothing more....it is the light of the universe, being stars and celestial bodies as the atmosphere is, to the common viewer of the Earth's surface, transparent.
