I think Sergej Lukjanenko's "Day Watch" and other books are fantasy after all, I guess. Although they are about current times :S

haha choas thanks... well if you get a chance try L.E. Modesitt Jr. if you like hairy potter you will probly like him... hes not your typical crazy fanstay writer:) he has an intersting magic system that could be considered very complex yet simple. and the best part is theres 11 books i think in the series. Its called the magic of recluce for the first book. The sereis is called the saga of recluce. you can find his website by searching google under the word recluce.

Anyway if talking about HP, it hasn't got any clear magic "system" or laws, Sergej Lukjanenko's "Day Watch" has.
I have almost finished creating a world few months ago but left it, too little time, maybe later :)

Terry Goodkind is a good writer but you'll have the feeling that you've read his books somewhere else. Not too origional but he writes well.

yes the sword of truth series is great, I've probably read over 700 books, i have read books from every single author mentioned in this discussion, what about shanarra series by terry brooks? or kushiels series? umm let me sort through all the great books. umm.....oh i know, raymond feist? his magician series and the mistriss of the empire series plus the other one are also great. lets see....

GEORGE R.R. MARTIN "A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE"

read this series, it is a must. absolutely riveting. couldnt put it down to save my life, i'm serious. it completely draws you into the plots and counter plots. the charactiers are extremly detailed and seem to be real life.

umm the exiles series, also good forgot the author though. I could go on and on, been reading since i was 11, very fast reader :D
