God my maths is so rusty these days.

My daughter wanted me to help with a problem but I'm completely lost, can you help.

I wont give the exact problem as I want to work through it myself so I understand before going over it with her so this is just an example of the same sort of thing.

You have 10,250 in a bank account. The account pays 4% interest a month but will only allow you to have a maximum of 10,250 in it.

How do you work out how much to take out of the account each month so that after the monthly interest is paid you end up with 10,250 in ithe account again?

ie. You start with 10,250, take out x amount and then when the interest is paid you have 10,250 again.

Anyone want to help an old fella out?

If you take out enough to leave yourself with 9,855.77 each month, interest will put it back up to 10,250.0008, which is close enough to 10,250. Simply divide 10,250 by 1.04 (1 + .04 interest)

ah but you would hafta work the 4% interest on the amount you have not on 10,250 because when the interest goes in you won't have 10,250 you'll have only the amount you had after you've taken some out so if you hada leave say 9,750 the 4% would be on 9,750 not on 10,250 ... see what i mean

so this problem is harder than it looks at first glance

If you divide 10,250 by 1.04, you will get the amount that, when multiplied by 1.04, would render 10,250.

So divide 10,250 by 1.04 gives you 9855.77 (rounded up)

4% of 9855.77 is 394.23

Add 394.23 to 9855.77 gives you the original 10,250

Yep that works, thanks Shadow. Now all I have to do is explain it
to her without too many tantrums ;)

Now see... that stuff always gets me into trouble in Physics 2. A problem will ask one thing and you're supposed to do it by the formulas that the book gives you. Except I, being Mr. Perfectionist will do it so that I get the answer from my own knowledge. Correct answer, just not by the book.
EX:
A guy throws a ball at 14.7 m/s off of a 19.6m tall balcony. At the same time, another guy throws a ball up in the air at the same velocity from said balcony. What is the difference in the times that they hit the ground.

I'm a senior in geometry... :S

It sucks, because I sleep in the class, wake up to do some assignment, am finished with it first, and go back to sleep. I have an A currently.

-I take accounting. Not much math in that tho.
