Agreed. Iiridayn's proposal would work much better than the old way of linking ships to planets. We would have the "benefits" of such a linkage (risk of loss of ship or at least resources on the ship if planet they are assigned to is lost) and we would avoid the random loss of ships.

No ships lost with leave planet, obliterate planet, give planet to another player (I don't know how many ships I lost with those three actions, but it was a LOT of them, and very annoying).

The only way to lose ships would be to have your planet taken from you that they were assigned to and then to not log in before the player taking your HW has time to get a fighter out to kill the ships who have had their locations identified before you can move them.

For players who are online a lot (e.g., SmartFox and a few others), this would not be much of a risk, as they would get online and see the news, and then move their ships. For players with SL Satelite linked to notify them by IM of a planet capture, the risk of ships being lost would also be minimal if they were able to get online fast and save the ships.

However, for most players, this would be a strong incentive to have ships assigned to a relatively safe HW, as they location of ships disclosure when planets are lost could be a devistating blow.

One possibility as a means of implementing this idea would be to have only SOME of the ships assigned to the planet have their location revealed (thanks Abe for that). The analogy to reality in that regard could be that the invaders discovered some of the ship locations in records that were recovered after the successful attack, but some of the records of ship locations were destroyed, preventing the attackers from being able to find these ships. This might be a way of having partial ship assignments to planets that would matter and hurt if a planet is lost, but it would not be as devistating a blow as would be losing all your ships as well as your HW in case of a successful attack against your HW planet.

Just a thought: point rewards for holding a big HW? Just remembered CJ's proposed "defender points" and "attacker points".
Of course many people will be against this :S

Yeah, I liked CJ's recommendation in that regard. It would enable more defense related points without destroying the recognition of points value for attackers.

However, I kind of prefer resource bonus awards for defender (such as credits), as most defenders are more motivated by building up stronger defenses and resources on planets to use someday in either attack or defense than by short-term points. Defenders know that they will not win the current round on points, but they also hope someday to be a very strong and powerful force in the game with the ability to target and defeat less well defended players.

Proff, Iri'ssuggestion would be a strong incentive to keep them as far away from HW's as you can That way if you lose your HW you would loose all of your other resources as well. It would be less of a threat to keep 1 ship tied to 1 system so at the most only 1 is at risk at a time. :shrug:

And yes defenders like to build. That makes them bigger targets which I don't mind, I do mind that currently that makes us the only targets.
