Yes they are, all planets enter the universe as x9 or x10, a great number of these get obliterated so each month out of the x amount of planets dropped into the universe, probably.. hrrm... x/20 survive.

20x not really that rare, people have come across them as time went on. i know the coords to more than a few 20x that nobody else knows about. Its just that the risk of holding on to the 20x outweighs the bennifits for most people
example: situation- you come across a nearby that is a player's T stockpile and is a 20x. only 15 mil def (saying shield was down) so thats what 10 assaults. assauming you have a total T base of 30 mil once you capture that planet you will be down to say 10 mil T (for round numbers) if you put your T on the 20x. it is assaumed that it will be retaliated on. then you will be out of T and have to start over. If you only put say. 3 mil T on it you lose that 3 mil T for say 10 mil of the attackers T (not true but easy numbers to work with). You would be down to 7 mil T. so in total you have lost much more than you used to capture the planet. Not very economical if you defend it. However if you just obliterate the planet you remove the nearby, make it a stop loss of sorts because you won't lose anymore T, and you prevent other players from taking said 20x and finding your coords

"So it's idiotic to waste them! You big clans are pathetic if you can't mount an effective defense."

Why so? The survival rates of planets with 9-14pp is very low. But from 15pp and up it is very high. So if you find a planet with 15pp, you are unlikely to obliterate it.

However if you capture such a planet from an active player, they are likely to hold that planet in high value and be coming back for it at some point in the future. As has already been stated, you cannot be online 24/7 and it makes far more tactical sense to have one or more central defencive strongholds than to spread yourself out along your planets (although this is a creditable strategy that would protect your production if you chose to produce on these planets).

However, because of the scale of cost for defending these planets (turrets, resoruces wasted on the defence which weakens main planet etc...) it makes far more tactical sense to obliterate these planets.

You are forgetting Skylark, that each round a planet gains a pp. So for every x20 obliterated in a round (say... 10 in an average round) there are more that are becoming x20s, probably 20 a round.

There are also the numerous green coords in the universe that are x20, many players have coords to green planets that are easily x18 or higher now (I know I have at least 30 of such coords), but choose not to use them yet.

x20 make the most sense to use as a HW or heavily defended production planet. But if you can't defend it in this way, or it would be difficult to do without harming the rest of your empire, more sense would be made to obliterate the x20 planet and get a lower pp planet that you will not have to defend as hardly.

Precisely.

Green planets don't show up on nearby scanners, nor are they found by probes. Normally they are known to players. You see if a player doesn't complete the newbie arena, and does not colonize his system, he is dropped into the Real Arena after 14 days. Therefore his system still has the green planet in them. An active player will come across this system, capture the player planet and the SP. Then record the co-ordinates and come back for the green planet at a later date.

This tactic is mostly used if a player is low on planets and desperate for coords OR if he feels like setting up a new homeworld and wants a high pp planet to do it with.
