You have seven days of immunity from when you start. Most players are better off staying in the newbie arena for the full 14 days after getting 25 planets as quickly as possible.

Once you leave the newbie arena, your planets tend to be clustered in a small area, so use the warp or trade with new alliance mates to get planets which are not in the same small area.
