Only a little practice, sadly. I was in ARMA (used to be called HACKA -- a clever way to remember the change was "HACKA ARMA off" ) for a little while, where theory was discussed, and I attained some training in the longsword (and it's pretty heavy already ;P. Now imagine a 6 foot sword -_-; ). I also have taken two fencing courses locally (beginner and intermediate they were called, but I'll need many more years of practice to get a touch on Kotica ). Finally, various online "research" scattered across the years (though my sources aren't the strongest ;P), coupled with a great interest, reading lots of fantasy novels of varying degrees of reality (I pay more attention to descriptions of swordwork in the ones where the author researched), and my own imagination. So take anything I say about weapons with some salt, as most of what I know, suspect, or conjecture may be wrong (and I don't always clarify the line between what I know and what I conjecture ;P).

A nice example of a realistic fight betwee a lightweight rapier and a heavy claymore is "Rob Roy"

MO - Mr Fancy Pants using the rapier is dancin around Rob Roy. Makin harassing cuts and keeping distance. Wearing out Rob using the heavier sword. Mr F Pants was kickin his butt. And then (SPOILER NOTICE) as he makes the final coup d' ta with a thrust to the chest, Rob actually grabs his sword by the hand --- that would've runed his hand for life (IMO) and makes death thrust to Mr. F Pants. And in the modern rules, you aren't allowed to grab your opponents weapon
